ERP Migration

If you think it's time to migrate your ERP system to a better option, there are several steps to consider to make the process of migration as seamless as possible.

Preparation

First, you should take a look at and scrutinise your operations, with your current ERP system in mind and what migrating to a new system could do to help your business. Gathering support throughout the organisation for migration from CEOs to HR, accounting and front-line employees on the shop floor can help you gather important information to build your case and help you define your KPIs. Take inventory of your current workflows and systems to review what is and isn't working for you, and ask questions such as:

Is your data consistent across all operations?
Are your systems and data well integrated?
Do you have any regulatory or compliance requirements for how and where data is stored?
Do all employees have access to the data they require?

Selection

After you have internally assessed all your business processes, and you have considered different deployment options and variables, you can then begin to evaluate the pros and cons of different ERP solutions and consider the functions and characteristics that will suit your business best. You might want to consider a hybrid solution, and it's important to prepare for a complex change management operation. You should evaluate both the general functions of your new ERP as well as the industry-specific functionality, to ensure that the entire system will work well for your business beyond the core functionality.

Action

With your new ERP selected and ready to go, having a proper phasing plan for deployment is critical. Clear schedules and priorities should be set out to ensure that data migration, employee training, management reviews and module implementation all runs as smoothly as possible. Modify your access rights and employee permissions so that everyone has appropriate access to the system and the data, then monitor and evaluate your new system and make any changes as needed.
